Don’t Talk About Your Ex In Front of the Kids

You may be right.  Your ex might just be the most terrible parent in the world.  Whatever your frustrations, anger, resentment, bitterness, or absolute hate you may feel towards your ex may be justified for what they are doing to you or your kids, but talking about it in front of them destroys who they are.

Frustrations with the ex should never be voiced in front of the children.  Sometimes that can be difficult, especially when wanting to defend yourself from what is being said about you.  Your kids may tell you about the dirt the other parent is saying about you, but don’t even defend yourself.  Ask if they have questions or concerns about what is being discussed and  answer them without putting the other parent down.  It ONLY hurts the kids!!!

Younger children become very confused and don’t know who to trust when bad things are being discussed about the parents they love.  Soon enough, children grow up and see the function or lack thereof in the family dynamics.  Children will see the truth lived out through consistency of parenting in their lives.

These two verses are a reminder for me…

“Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against anyone among your people, but love your neighbor as yourself.  I am the Lord.”  Leviticus 19:18

“Love must be sincere, hate what is evil; cling to what is good.  Be devoted to one another in love.  Honor one another above yourselves.”  Romans 12:9-10
